Electronics: How to Shop Smart

By Fred Jackson

You'll find plenty of variety when it comes to what electronics you can buy and where you can get them. Although big name retail stores may be the first thought, more people are trusting online sellers for their electronic needs. The web has helped many satisfied customers, and you may want to find out what it has to offer.

For most people, the number one concern is money. Nearly 20,000 readers responded to a Consumer Reports survey in 2006 that evaluated their electronics shopping habit, including where they found the best prices. The majority liked the prices they found on the internet best. They found that online sites had prices that were equal to or better than prices at electronics stores. Brand name MP3 players and TVs are just a couple of the electronics that are purchased. Online shoppers go to many trusted websites to make their web purchases.

Customer service was another area that was evaluated in the survey. If youve ever gone shopping in any type of retail store, you know that customer service can be lacking. Often you have to deal with a salesperson who isnt knowledgeable or one whos uncomfortably pushy. Online shoppers, on the other hand, experience something much different. Online shopping puts a huge amount of product information right at your fingertips. If you need more information, you can simply do a little more research on the web.

In the vein of customer service, an important area to note is the return policy. The return policy can be the difference between you being stuck with a broken product or having one that is suitable for your home. When items are shipped long distances there is even more risk of damage. If you want to buy online, you have to know the return policy of the site. Buydig.com, for instance, has a very strict return policy. The number of products that can be returned to this seller is extremely limited and has a small window of opportunity. Costco is one example of a lenient return policy. You can return most items any time after purchase although one notable exception is computers. You can even take an online purchase to a store warehouse.

No matter what electronics you want to buy, choose your retailer carefully. For many people in-store shopping has yielded great results, and others want the new experience of buying online. Whatever you choose know that there are plenty of good options and good products available.
